Emergency crews hold safety expo in Hudsonville

HUDSONVILLE, Mich. (WZZM) -- September is National Preparedness Month, a reminder to review your own safety plans and make sure you know what to do in case of an emergency.

In Hudsonville on Tuesday, the Fire Department and the Ottawa County Sheriff's Department hosted a community cookout. They also demonstrated the different tools they use to respond to different situations.

First responders want to help teach people who live there about all of the emergency services that are available, said emergency management director Dave Dahl.

West Mich. man returns from trip to surprise home makeover

JENISON, Mich. (WZZM) -- Last Friday, we told you about the group of people in Jenison working together to help a friend in need.

Herm Kent's wife Debbie has Alzheimer's. Between working and caring for her, he hasn't had much time for home maintenance.

So while Herm was away in Kentucky, his friends and co-workers made some major updates to his home.

Herm arrived home on Monday to the surprise improvements, and WZZM 13 photojournalist Bridgette Pacholka was there. Watch the video above to find out what happened.

Community comes together to help a neighbor in need

JENISON, Mich. (WZZM) -- Teaming up to help. That's what family, friends and co-workers of a Jenison man are doing while he is out of town.

Herm Kent and his wife Debbie will celebrate their 39th wedding anniversary next month.

Debbie has late stage Alzheimer's. With his wife's health issues, Herm hasn't been able to keep up with work around the house.

While he's away out of state, family and co-workers are rehabbing his home. They're replacing the driveway, back deck and landscaping.

Kent Companies even shut down a couple job sites for the weekend to allow employees to volunteer their time. Some of the company's vendors are also donating time and work on the makeover.

Two Bagger Dave's locations closing

GRANDVILLE, Mich. (WZZM) -- Two Bagger Dave's restaurants in West Michigan are no longer open for business.

A note posted at the door of the chain's Grandville location on Canal Ave. tells customers the restaurant is closed. Bagger Dave's opened in Grandville back in 2012.

The chain is also closing its restaurant in Holland.

That leaves the chain with two West Michigan locations: one on Fulton St. in Grand Rapids and one on Kraft Ave. in Cascade Twp.

Michigan man wins World Yoyo Contest in Japan

(WZZM) -- The world has a new yoyo champion, and he's from West Michigan.

Jake Elliot, 20, is originally from Grand Rapids and went to Grandville High School. Now, he lives in Milford, Mich. where he works full time for YoYoTricks.com teaching people how to yoyo.

The annual World Yoyo Contest was held this year in Japan from August 13-17.

The 20-year-old pulled off the most narrow victory in world yoyo competition history. In the exciting "Freehand" style of play, where the yoyo is not attached to the player's finger, Elliott edged out the six-time world yoyo champion from Japan, bringing the title back to the US for the first time since 2007.

Four taken to hospital after Ottawa County crash

HUDSONVILLE, Mich. (WZZM) -- Four people are in the hospital Sunday evening after a two vehicle crash in Ottawa County.

Deputies on scene tell WZZM 13 a gray van with a female driver and two young passengers was traveling eastbound on Barry Street around 4:15 p.m. Initial investigation shows the woman either failed to yield, or didn't stop at the stop sign at 22nd Street.

A male driver, and lone occupant of a black SUV, t-boned the van while heading north on 22nd Street.

All four were taken to Butterworth Hospital in Grand Rapids.

Both drivers are listed in serious condition Monday morning. The passengers of the van, a 14-year-old girl and a 13-year-old boy are listed in critical and stable condition, respectively.

The accident remains under investigation by the Ottawa County Sheriff's Office.

One person in custody for shots fired report

GRANDVILLE, Mich. (WZZM) -- One person is in custody after police received a shots fired report late Monday night.

A viewer called WZZM 13 to report police presence near the corner of Wilson Avenue and 28th Street. When we arrived on the scene, Walker police had a perimeter set up near the corner of Oakes Street and Wilson.

They say no one was hurt by the gun fire and they will be sending out a news release on the incident.

The scene has since been cleared.
