HUDSONVILLE, Mich.—A Hudsonville High School senior is cashing in on her film talent for college.

Rachel O’Connell recently won the Judges Choice Grand Prize in the Discover Manufacturing Today Video Challenge, earning her a $1,000 job training scholarship for Grand Rapids Community College.

O’Connell, a Careerline Tech Center Media Communications student, competed against high school students in 13 West Michigan counties for the honor.  Each student had approximately three weeks to produce a video highlighting why a career in manufacturing is a great career choice.  In that time, students had to obtain contacts and secure mentor companies, film, edit and submit their entries. Nearly three dozen CTC students tapped Automated Machine Systems, Holland Litho, JR Automation and Gentex for help with their films.

“I was thrilled when five out of the eight videos shown at the awards ceremony were from CTC,” said William Wolbrink, media communications instructor for CTC. “The competition provided invaluable learning opportunities and experiences for the students.”

The award ceremony was held April 30 at Celebration Cinema North.  As part of the Video Challenge Award, CTC's  media communications program received $6,500 to spend on equipment to increase production value.
