Barbeque and Jazz equal a great time

Barbeque and Jazz equal a great time

Wednesday night residents of Grandville gathered to listen to Jazz music and enjoy some delicious barbeque.  The annual Michigan Week BBQ, generally held at the Library performance area, was moved up the street to the Fire Station which holds an Open House yearly at the same time.

Mayor Buck welcomed attendees to the annual event and was sure to mention all the booths and food available, as well as introducing the bands.  Students from the Middle School and High School Jazz bands entertained those in attendance with toe-tapping, finger-snapping, mood enhancing music.  Frequent solos punctuated the songs, followed by polite clapping congratulating the soloist, which were well played and got everyone in a positive frame of mind.  Smiles were evident on all those at the Fire Station that night, and as in years past, the venue was packed!

Local Tracks: "Popular" by Axis

Local Tracks: "Popular" by Axis

Written by Mallory McKnight

One of these things is not like the other: rap, hockey, show tunes. The first two, of course, are blood sports with a reputation for naked aggression and, coincidentally, things Hudsonville-based rapper Axis (née Bryan DeCorte) does very well.

And the show tunes? Well, a hook lifted from from the soundtrack for Broadway smash Wicked supplies the sugary, sweet frosting on Axis’ acidic, sarcastic ode to empty fame, Popular. With the show's chorus and staccato piano in the background, he rhymes about Lindsay Lohan, a certain reality show set in New Jersey, Ed Hardy and being an average Joe. The result is a head-achingly catchy earworm that promises to rattle around your brain for days.

“I want to be popular for my music,” DeCorte says. “Not because I’m on Jersey Shore, looking like an idiot in front of millions of people.”

My thoughts on misconceptions about the Masons...

My thoughts on misconceptions about the Masons...

Lately, I've been following the news about a young lady, Alyssia Crook, who will soon have a leg amputated while under the care of the Shriners Hospital for Children. It is little known but you have to be a member of the Masonic Fraternity in order to be a Shriner. Grand Rapids is a wonderful place to live, but as a Mason myself, I’m troubled by the misconceptions that residents seem to have about the Shriners and what they, along with Masonic Fraternity, do for America.

First of all, we Masons are not a cult nor are we Satan worshipers. Sadly, I am constantly accused of this by "friends" and furthermore that I am a member of a cult that has a purpose of taking over the world. This is certainly not so. The Masonic Fraternity might be the largest and oldest fraternity in the world but their intentions are honest and pure.
