Kent District Library putting the 'pub' back in public library

KENT COUNTY, Mich.—The Kent District Library is putting the “pub” in public library starting next month.

With the growing popularity of the craft beer industry in West Michigan, KDL decided to begin offering free home brewing classes, brewery tours, brewery book discussions and beer tastings in January and February 2014.

Get a "backstage pass" and see how Rockford Brewing Co. makes its signature beers such as Rogue River Brown, Sheehan's Irish Stout and Hoplust IPA. After the tour, show your library card to get a special deal on beer tasting and learn about KDL materials for loan that focus on beer and home brewing. Tour and talk will be held at Rockford Brewing Co., 12 E. Bridge St. on Jan. 15 and Feb. 19 at 6:30 p.m.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich.—They aren’t all on the big screen.

Michigan Blood is getting ready to reward life-saving superheroes right here in the Grand Rapids community. The organization is teaming up with Celebration Cinema to offer a free movie pass and a bag of popcorn to each to person who attempts to donate blood during the holidays.

Michigan Blood needs to collect more than 2,200 units of blood every week to supply patients and hospitals around the state.  Donations traditionally drop around the holidays as people travel.

Young Hudsonville artist featured in 'Highlights for Children'

HUDSONVILLE, Mich.--  A Hudsonville girl who is not even 10 years old is already a published artist.

Highlights for Children is featuring a drawing by 9-year-old Emmaleigh Rose Lyon in its January 2014 issue.  Her drawing, titled “Sunflowers”, is featured in the “Your Own Pages” section of the magazine.

Emmaleigh is a fourth grade student at South Elementary.  She enjoys school, singing, helping people and animals, playing piano and being creative.  Emmaleigh wants to be a singer, dancer or pianist when she grows up.

Every year, Highlights received more than 35,000 submissions from readers.  The magazine selects work from a variety of children to foster their creativity.  Highlights printed its one-billionth copy in June 2006.

American Red Cross is out for blood

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich.—It’s Halloween time, and the American Red Cross is out for blood. 

This month, the organization is partnering up with the Grand Rapids Ballet to offer donors a buy one, get one free coupon to the company’s performance of “Dracula.”

“Much like Dracula needed blood to stay alive, thousands of hospital patients also need this precious resource to survive,” said Todd Kulman, communications program manager with the Great Lakes Blood Services Region. 

This year’s production of Dracula returns with a newly orchestrated score and updated scenery and projections.

West Michigan's own Iron Chef competition unfolds September 24

You don’t have to switch your TV to the Food Network tonight to catch an Iron Chef competition.

Eight teams of student chefs will try to out-cook one another Tuesday, September 24 during the 2013 Cascade Iron Chef competition.   Chefs from the Grand Rapids Community College Secchia Institute for Culinary Education will prepare gourmet cuisine using the "secret ingredient" for a chance to take home the iron skillet award and a college scholarship.  WZZM 13’s Valerie Lego will emcee the competition, which will be judged by a panel of local celebrities.  The judging panel includes:

New store celebrates grand opening with grant to local school

GRANDVILLE, Mich.—A new store is now open in Grandville.

Mayor Pro Tem Steve Maas cut the ribbon to Jo-Ann Fabrics and Crafts September 12.   The new store is located at 3323 Century Center St. SW, across from Meijer.   It’s one of nearly 65 new Jo-Ann stored planned for 2013.

To celebrate the new store, Jo-Ann awarded a $2,000 grant to a local school to help fund a project of its choosing.  The store is also collecting donations to support the American Heart Association (AHA).  Last year, customers, employees and the company donated more than $142,000 to the AHA.
