MSU’s second annual Gran Fondo cycling event raises funds for skin cancer research

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich.-- Michigan State University College of Human Medicine announces plans for its second annual Gran Fondo on June 28, 2014.

Italian for “Big Ride,” proceeds from this this non-competitive cycling event go towards programs to increase awareness, prevention and detection of skin cancer and supports MSU’s skin cancer research.

GRANDVILLE, Mich.--  Bookworms are invited out to meet local author Ruth Ann Lea during a book signing event in Grandville.

On April 12, Lea, who is a resident of Grand Rapids, will be signing copies of her book, “Granny Grace”, which is written for everyone who has lost a loved one.

 Here is an excerpt from the book:

“Granny Grace has been in our church as long as anyone can remember.  She was Granny Grace when my mamma was little. 

The other day, Mamma got a call about Granny.  They said she got very sick and went home to be with Jesus.  Mamma cried. I cried.”

The book signing event will run from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. at Orange Leaf Frozen Yogurt, located at 3819 Rivertown Parkway in Grandville.

GRANDVILLE, Mich.--  A year after competitor Cabela’s opened its doors just two miles away, Gander Mountain is celebrating the grand opening of its newly-remodeled Grandville store.

“It’s exciting to bring our great selection of merchandise, a sharp new look and improved shopping experience to so many of our Gander Mountain stores,” said David Pratt, Gander Mountain’s CEO. “Through dozens of major remodeling projects at stores throughout our network, we’re giving our loyal patrons and our newest fans an even better place to get the best gear and expertise at the best prices.”

GRANDVILLE, Mich.-- A new restaurant will celebrate its grand opening in Grandville on Monday, April 7.

Grillin Wings & More is located at 4410 Chicago Drive.  The restaurant serves up a variety of fried foods, hot dogs, sandwiches, wraps salads, seafood and wings dipped in any of the restaurant's 17 signature sauces.  There are also daily specials, which you can find on the restaurant's website.

Grillin Wings & More's grand opening celebration will start at noon on Monday, with a ribbon cutting ceremony at 12:30 p.m.

My Town:Students advance to Science Olympiad State Tournament

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich.—More than a dozen teams of West Michigan youth will head to Lansing next month for the Science Olympiad State Tournament.

The teams competed for a spot in the competition during the Region 12 Michigan Science Olympiad event held Saturday.  It was the 30th anniversary for the competition, held at Grand Valley State University.

Based on the results, the following teams will compete at the state Capitol:

            Middle School Teams (in order of place)

1.     Lakeshore Middle School

2.     Grandville Middle School

3.     Jenison Jr. High

4.     Chandler Woods Charter

My Town: Nominations sought for Heart of West Michigan United Way awards

KENT COUNTY, Mich.—Heart of West Michigan United Way is seeking nominations for its inaugural GIVE, ADVOCATE and VOLUNTEER awards.

The awards are meant to celebrate nonprofits, companies and people who have made a difference in the community.  The GIVE Award goes to a company that has displayed generosity within the community, and created a culture of giving within its organization last year.

The ADVOCATE Award honors a person or nonprofit organization who leads and works with people to improve the health and wellness of the community, leaving a lasting impact on Kent County.

The VOLUNTEER Award goes to a company that promotes and provides year-round opportunities for employees to volunteer within their community, improving Kent County.

My Town: Ottawa County seedling sale deadline April 4

COOPERSVILLE, Mich.--  Time is running out to get in your order during the Ottawa Conservation District’s annual tree seedling sale fundraiser.

This year the OCD is offering seven types of conifers, six types of deciduous trees, eight types of shrubs and other plants.  Community members can also order books, bird and bat houses, plant products and wildlife repellents. You can find the order form here.

The goal of the Ottawa Conservation District is distribute native plants to help with reforestation, windbreaks, wildlife habitats and to prevent erosion.

All orders must be placed by April 4.  Seedlings will be distributed Saturday, April 26, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Reender’s Blueberry Farm in West Olive.  For additional information, contact Becky Huttenga at becky.huttenga@macd.org or (616) 846-8770 ext. 5.
