My Town: Elzinga & Volkers hosts 'Alive 365: Safety Week'

HUDSONVILLE, Mich.-- Elzinga & Volkers Construction Professionals Wednesday announced it will kick off its second annual Alive 365: Safety Week with a safety symposium at 11:30 a.m. Friday, March 13 at The Pinnacle Center.

Representatives from Associated Builders and Contractors of West Michigan, American Subcontractors Association, Inc. and The Michigan Occupational Safety and Health Administration will be on hand to discuss various industrial safety topics. Keynote speaker Dr. John Austin, an internationally recognized expert in proving behavior-based solutions to organizational challenges, will discuss the importance of safety leadership within organizations.

During Alive 365: Safety Week 2015, training sessions will be held throughout West Michigan on the following topics:

My Town: Become a hero by giving blood during Red Cross Month

During Red Cross Month in March, the American Red Cross reminds eligible blood donors that it doesn’t take a cape or super powers to be a hero. By donating blood, donors can become a hero for patients in need.

Red Cross Month is dedicated to the everyday heroes who support the Red Cross mission by giving blood, volunteering their time, learning lifesaving skills or making a financial contribution.

The need for blood is constant. The Red Cross depends on blood donor heroes in communities across the nation to collect enough blood to meet the needs of patients at approximately 2,600 hospitals nationwide. Donors with all blood types are needed, particularly those with types O negative, A negative and B negative.

My Town: United Way hosts fourth annual Community Baby Shower

Greater Ottawa County United Way will host the 4th Annual LIVE UNITED Community Baby Shower during the week of February 9-14, 2015. Donations received from the public will benefit babies, young children and their families. When families receive baby essentials free of charge, they can use their resources for crucial needs such as food, transportation, and housing.

Five locations will accept donations during their business hours from February 9-14. In Grand Haven, donations can be dropped off at: Tri Cities Family YMCA, Anytime Fitness, and Loutit Library. In Holland, donations can be dropped off at Chico’s and DeNooyer Chevrolet. Donation suggestions include (ONLY NEW ITEMS CAN BE ACCEPTED): clothing, educational toys and books, car seats, high chairs, hygiene items, diapers and wipes. Perishables and used items cannot be accepted.

And every horse in this race wins; all money collected for a specific genre will be spent on materials in that genre only.

My Town: Get financial freedom tips during 'Show Me The Money Day' Jan. 24

GRAND HAVEN, Mich. -- Grand Haven has many resources that can help residents better their financial situation.  Neighborhood Housing Services is planning the second annual Show Me the Money Day to help bring these resources together at the Loutit District Library for residents of Ottawa County.

Show Me the Money Day is Saturday, Jan. 24 from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. in program rooms A and B.  The event will include  free financial classes, table-top vendor presentations, information and appointment scheduling for free tax assistance services and prize drawings. Participants can learn how to begin to get out of debt, increase savings, about home ownership information and programs, and much more.

My Town: Time to trash the tree!  Free Christmas tree recycling locations

Christmas is over, which means it’s time to trash the tree.

Many municipalities are offering free tree recycling services to residents with a natural tree.  Some communities are planning to put the trees through a chipper and use the remnants to cover park trails and other green spaces.  Here is the schedule for live tree drop-offs:

Ada Township (Through Jan. 12)

  • Ada Township Park, from 7:30 a.m. to 8 p.m.

 

Alpine Township (Through Jan. 31)

  • Behind Township Hall, 5255 Alpine Ave. NW

 

Cannon Township (Through Jan. 10)

  • West side of the township building; RHS Honor Society will help unload trees Jan. 10 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. (donations encouraged)

 

Courtland Township (Through Jan. 31)

  • Fire Station #1 on 14 Mile Road
