News

GEORGETOWN TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WZZM) -- An elderly man was hurt in a house fire Wednesday afternoon in Jenison, the Ottawa County Sheriff's Office said late Wednesday evening. Earlier Wednesday, authorities on the scene had said the man was dead.

Flames were reported around 1:40 p.m. in the 8000 block of Teakwood Drive and were seen shooting from the back of the house.

Eyewitnesses say a nurse and neighbors tried to pull a hospice patient to safety but were unsuccessful. Fire crews found the man on the floor and pulled him from the home. He was taken to a hospital.

Neighbors identify the man as 79-year-old Dick Hallwachs. His wife Nancy and son Kristofer both died in a fire at the same home in Dec. 2011.

The house is a total loss and the cause remains under investigation. Crews from four fire departments battled the blaze.
