15 vehicles involved in crash on 44th St, over I-196

GRANDVILLE, Mich.(WZZM) - Westbound 44th St. was closed at the I-196 overpass, for several hours Saturday night, after a 15 car accident. The crash happened around 7:30.

Investigators say one of the drivers got out of his vehicle and was hit by another vehicle. That driver and one other person were taken to area hospitals with non-life threatening injuries.

The accident remains under investigation, but police do not think alcohol was a factor in the crash.

A Grandville Police Department patrol car was hit about 15 minutes before that crash. Investigators say the patrol car was on the side of Eastbound I-196 near Chicago Dr.

The cars emergency lights were on when it was hit. The officer was investigating another accident at the time and no one was injured. Michigan State Police are investigating that crash.

Grandville Police would like to remind drivers of the Michigan Department of Transportation winter driving tips:

Always wear a safety belt when in a vehicle, and be sure children are properly buckled as well.

Slow down when visibility is low and/or when road conditions are snowy or icy - In Ice and Snow Take it Slow!

Give snowplow drivers plenty of room to plow and salt/sand the roads — Snowplows Need Room to Groom!

Be extra cautious on bridges because they can be icy when roadways are dry.

Accelerate and brake slowly and avoid abrupt steering maneuvers, especially when merging or changing lanes.

Don't pump anti-lock brakes.

Don't use Cruise control roads are icy.
