Man run over by unlicensed teen

HUDSONVILLE, Mich. (WZZM)-  A 16-year old exchange student is facing charges after she accidentally ran over a Grand Rapid's attorney.

Jason Ronning, 34, was sitting on a park bench with one of his children, when a truck came up behind him. He pushed the child out of the way, before being pushed into a water fountain and then, run over by the truck.

"We heard screaming, loud, help, help, call 911," says Robert Highland, who was walking out of a nearby store. As he walked up to the scene, he heard Ronning yell for help. "He was lying like there, his legs weren't moving. There was blood coming down from his head. His legs weren't moving, his legs weren't moving."

Ronning was rushed to the hospital with serious injuries. His co-workers at Avanti Law Group, where Ronning is a criminal attorney, say he has two broken legs, a broken arm, and pelvic injuries.

Meantime, the driver of the truck, a 16-year old girl from Germany, is facing charges in juvenile court.

Lt. Steve Kempker says, "We had to expedite that a bit, because she's a foreign exchange student from Germany here on a Visa in the United States. She was attending a school in West Michigan."

The teen is facing charges for operating without a license, reckless driving, and operating without a license causing injury. Lt. Kempker says the girl's 18-year old friend was teaching her how to drive.

"It looks like the accelerator of the truck was pushed instead of brake."

The Ottawa County Sheriff's Department says the 18-year old man will also face charges. Normally, it would be legal for an adult to teach a minor from the United States how to drive, if they had a learners permit. But, in this case, the 16-year old driver did not have a license in Germany and cannot drive here in the United States. She will be allowed to return home, next week.
