GRAND RAPIDS, Mich.—Visitors to seven area Culver’s restaurants  today can join the effort to bring veterans to their war memorials in our nation’s capitol.

Participating Culver's restaurants will donate 10 percent of sales on Tuesday, May 20 to the Honor Flight Network, a nonprofit group that transports veterans to the national monuments.  

“We’re happy for the opportunity to support the Honor Flight network and we hope our guests will too,” says Craig Culver, co-founder of the restaurant chain. “Men and women who put their lives on the line to protect our freedom are true heroes,” added Culver.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich.—A group of local restaurants are joining the effort to ensure veterans get a chance to see their war memorials in our nation’s capitol.

Seven area Culver’s restaurants will host fundraisers Tuesday, May 20 for the Honor Flight Network, a nonprofit group that transports veterans to the national monuments.  Ten percent of sales on May 20 will go toward the effort.

KENT COUNTY, Mich.—If you’re looking for a clean, safe place to dine out this weekend, the Kent County Health Department has some suggestions- 471 of them, actually.

The KCHD recently announced the winners of its 2nd annual Food Safety Awards.  This year’s 471 winners were selected from more than 1700 licensed facilities that were inspected through 2013.    To qualify, each establishment had to meet the following criteria:

My Town: Outdoor Farmer's Market to feature more than 50 vendors

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich.— The Outdoor Farmer’s Market in downtown Grand Rapids will open for its second season this weekend.

Grand Rapids Downtown Market says the new season of outdoor shopping will start Saturday May 3.  The outdoor market will be open every Saturday in May, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The market will host its inaugural “Chefs at The Market” demonstration at 10 a.m.  A chef will showcase simple recipes you can follow using food available at the market.  This weekend’s demonstration will feature rhubarb.

Inside the market, visitors can take part in a free yoga session and enjoy live jazz music by Hugh DeWitt.  At noon, shoppers can also enjoy microgreens grown in the market’s greenhouse as part of a $5 tasting bar.

My Town Hudsonville: Beer City Spring Fest debuts May 3

HUDSONVILLE, Mich.—Holland is getting ready to host a new event celebrating Michigan’s growing craft beer industry.

The inaugural Beer City Spring Fest will take over the Hudsonville Fairgrounds Saturday, May 3.  More than 30 microbreweries, cider mills and distilleries will be showcasing their brews.  The event kicks off Beer Week in the Greater Grand Rapids area, which is the first week of May.

The American Legion Neal E. Fonger Post 179 is organizing the event, which will also include live music and food.  The proceeds will benefit local veterans and Autism Support of Kent County.

“Tickets went on sale Thursday, and we were amazed by the response,” said Joe Boyer of Fluid Art. “We nearly sold out of VIP tickets in the first two hours. [It’s] hard to believe this was a dry town just a few years ago.”

My Town: New restaurants to replace shuttered sports bar

ALPINE TOWNSHIP, Mich.—A new set of restaurants will soon replaced a shuttered sports bar, plagued by police calls.

Gipper’s Sports Bar and Grille was auctioned off last year.  The bar lost its liquor license in January 2012, shortly after two shootings within three months at the bar.

GRANDVILLE, Mich.-- A new restaurant will celebrate its grand opening in Grandville on Monday, April 7.

Grillin Wings & More is located at 4410 Chicago Drive.  The restaurant serves up a variety of fried foods, hot dogs, sandwiches, wraps salads, seafood and wings dipped in any of the restaurant's 17 signature sauces.  There are also daily specials, which you can find on the restaurant's website.

Grillin Wings & More's grand opening celebration will start at noon on Monday, with a ribbon cutting ceremony at 12:30 p.m.
